Skin Care After the Beach: How to Recover from Sun, Salt and Chlorine

How to care for your skin after the beach (and the pool): the summer recovery guide

Coming back from the beach with tight skin and dry hair is common. But it doesn't have to be inevitable — and it isn't just the sun's fault. Salt, chlorine, wind and heat all work on your skin in different ways. The good news: recovery is simpler than most people think.

What sun actually does to your skin

UV exposure triggers melanin production (your tan), but also accelerates transepidermal water loss and degrades surface collagen through UVA rays, which penetrate deeply regardless of your SPF.

Even with adequate sun protection, skin loses elasticity after prolonged exposure. Sunscreen reduces these effects significantly — but doesn't eliminate them.

The problem with salt: why it keeps dehydrating you

Sea water has a salt concentration of around 3.5%. Salt left on skin after swimming creates an osmotic effect that draws water towards the skin's surface, continuing to dehydrate it even when you're out of the water — for hours if skin isn't rinsed.

Chlorine: more aggressive than saltwater

Pool chlorine alters skin pH, strips the natural lipid film and can cause dryness and irritation. For hair, the effect is more pronounced: chlorine degrades keratin proteins, leaving hair porous and dull.

Practical rule: after every pool session, showering isn't optional — it's part of the care.

How to shower after the beach without making things worse

Hot water: no. Use warm water (34–37°C) and finish with a cool rinse.

Vigorous scrubbing: no. Sun-tanned skin is more fragile. Gentle circular motions are much better.

Sulphate-based products: best avoided. The Handso cold process Body Soaps like Aloe & Olive are sulphate-free and retain natural glycerin.

The 7-day recovery routine

Days 1–3: warm showers, gentle soap, moisturiser on still-damp skin. This is the most important window — the skin barrier is compromised and absorbs much more.

Days 4–7: skin finds its natural balance again if not further stressed. No special products needed — just consistency.

Your hair after summer

The Handso solid shampoo contains no aggressive sulphates — it cleanses effectively without stripping the hair's natural oils.

The bottom line

Skin and hair handle summer well when properly supported — not with expensive treatments, but with the right ingredients, warm water and consistency.
